RE: [Ntop] Collect traffic from LANUsually it's the switch - read the
discussion in docs/FAQ.

Where it gets dicey is that most modern 'hubs' are really switching hubs,
where small sections (a few ports) get switched together.

Most dual speed 'hubs' are really two hubs (a 10 Mbps and a 100 Mbps) w/ a
switch connecting them.

If you need to monitor both 10 and 100 Mbps segments, you need two NICs.

  ?
I have 3 networks separated by T1 links, and one server that I like to
track. On a switched network, I use old fashioned 3Com Super stack Hubs. I
got Network switch->Hub (NTOP/NPROBE box and Server). On the wan
links/Gateways I go from Router/Telco equipment to Hub (NTOP/NPROBE) to
switched network. I even have IP Addresses assigned to the NTOP box. I tried
port mirroring, but had some problems, and was too lazy to figure out if it
was OS (RH9) related, switch (Dell GB switch) or NTOP related.

Add a NIC to the ntop box, don't give it an IP address and use a Hub (TRUE
hub, not a switching hub) or a port tap to gain access to the traffic
flow.

This has been discussed on-list (although I don't remember the thread well
enough to point it out - search for 'unnumbered interface', maybe) and
  there's some stuff in docs/FAQ.
