Thanks to all of you who have been sending me comments and suggestions. I've done
some digging, and discovered that sflow appears to be an option on our core switch (a
FES 4802), but it does not appear to be an option for our edge switches (a mix of Edge
Iron 4802CF and 2402CF switches).

Maybe at this point it would be best for me to tell you what I want to get done, and
have you folks tell me how is best to do it. First off, I am really new to switching
and infrastructure and indeed to Network Administration, but I learn fast (thank God).

What I want to do is to be able to remotely monitor each of our switches (total of 7)
to look at traffic patterns, etc. an integrated Red/Green display would be helpful
(like WS Watch or Whats Up GOLD) and the ability to track problems back to their
source would be great. For example if I see a huge spike in network traffic, I would
like to be able to trace back to which computer is causing the mess to check whats
going on etc.

I see a lot of things in NTOP that I really like, but as I said in my initial message,
it looks like I'm missing packets or something. It may just be my perspective.

My set up is this

The FES at the core has two backbone legs running off it - one goes to an edge switch
on the east side of campus (48 Ports)

The other backbone leg goes to the West and South sides of the campus. First stop is
a 48 port edge iron in the elementary lab and then a short hop to a 24 port edge iron
in the same lab - From there it runs to the high school lab (all this is on the
Gigabit links) to another 48 port and another 24 port in that order.

The NTOP box is on the 48 port in the High school lab, as is the ghost server which is
generating the traffic to which I was referring. I know that NTOP sees the Fast Iron
Core, because it is listed in some of the displays, and I know that it sees the domain
controller for the same reason, and the domain controller is on the core switch.

I get the feeling that NTOP is at least a part of the solution because of what I see
it doing, but I don't know if I have an additional need, or if its just a setup issue.
I am open to adding additional software (I have a dedicated XP pro box and a
dedicated Linux (RHWS3) box available and can bring in more if necessary

That's the best way I know how to describe it. If you have any questions, please feel
free to e-mail me directly, on the list, or contact me via YAHOO IM at W8TAH, or AOL
IM at W8TAHHAM.

I really appreciate your help, and if I can ever help anyone here out, please let me
know.

Thanks
