That might be what it is. I compiled a pre-NTPL 2.4.x kernel. Im going to
compile 2.6 and give it a go. Bridge is built into it anyway so it should be
easier. Lucky for my my helper is a kernel hacker :P

Thanks for all your help

~Rob

Well, the only way things work is if we help each other. Yes, that puts a
lot of onus on you. This list offers help, but it's 'self help'. If you
want/need more than that, then consider paid support: contact me off-list.

That reads like a basic problem with shared libraries and/or gdb. You're
never even getting into ntop.

Google for "Cannot find new threads: generic error" shows a bunch of errors.
Reading between the lines, I think the gist of them is a mismatch between
the version of gdb and the installed libraries (i.e. a pre-NPTL gdb w/ an
NTPL glibc) (or an NPTL gdb w/ a pre-NTPL glibc).

So:

Have your helper / sysadmin update gdb to the latest and greatest version
for your OS. I'm running this on my Fedora 2 box:

$ gdb --version
GNU gdb Red Hat Linux (6.0post-0.20040223.19rh) Copyright 2004 Free Software
Foundation, Inc.
GDB is free software, covered by the GNU General Public License, and you are
welcome to change it and/or distribute copies of it under certain
conditions.
Type "show copying" to see the conditions.
There is absolutely no warranty for GDB. Type "show warranty" for details.
This GDB was configured as "i386-redhat-linux-gnu".

But most versions should run - just make sure that it's in sync with glibc
(and thus the threading library).

Then try running ntop under gdb again.

Unfortunately im not really a programmer, however I had someone help me run
gdb on it. This is the error it returns... Dig also fails with a similar
error.

Starting program: /usr/local/bin/ntop /usr/local/bin/ntop [Thread debugging
using libthread_db enabled] Error while reading shared library symbols:
Cannot find new threads: generic error

This is with the CVS version of ntop running on redhat ES 3. Tcpdump work
fine.

1. Linux bridges are treated - 2.4 and above - just like another interface,
so they should work fine. (it's not ntop, it's libpcap - as a q&d test you
can use another libpcap based tool such as tcpdump, ethereal, etc. to see if
the packets can be seen).

2. Read docs/FAQ - available off About | Help in your ntop instance or in
the source. At the bottom are instructions for running under gdb to capture
the failure point information.

Subject: [Ntop] Segmentation Fault

I have tried, compiling and also the ES 3 rpm, and with both packages I get
a segfault. Ntop is intended to run on a bridge/firewall using the
ebtables-brnf patch. Im curious if that's why its crapping out? Is it
written to work on a bridge? Is there a switch to get more info at why its
crashing? Here is the output when I run it.
