I had the same problem with gentoo's portage version of 3.2.  The one
bit that was interesting was that it worked for a while, and then
crashed one night, never to start again.  I tried unemerging ntop, and
deleting all of the files associated with it, and reinstalling several
times, but it never worked.  I finally tried installing manually from
sources and the problem went away.
