#1 No. Read docs/FAQ or the FAQ off the About menu in your ntop instance. #2/#3 - there is some support under development in the cvs version.
#4 - sensor placement is important - you need to make sure you see each packet only once. For netFlow probes, you can use Luca's nProbe (info @ ntop.org) or other similar packages. Also, look for the 'flow tools' package. -----Burton -----Original Message----- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of koarl sackl Sent: Sunday, June 04, 2006 11:24 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Ntop] General questions Hy there, im currently working on my diploma thesis. The topic is about bandwidth monitoring and forecasts about the future usage of the net. So i decided to use ntop to make it possible. But some questions arose which i could not answer, also with the help of the documentations and the FAQ and the mailing lists. I want to deploy several ntop-PCs in our network to monitor the traffic and understand who causes how much traffic and which service (mail, http,....) causes how much traffic. So these ntop machines should report to one collector which does the analysis. So here are my questions: 1.) I read that ntop is able to act as a netflow collector and a netflow probe. Am i right, that a ntop machine is able to create a netflow stream of the measured data? I couldn`t find this feature and so i was not able to activate it. Is this possible or not? 2.)If i have some ntop-machines and one central ntop-station. What is the best/easiest solution? How should the data be exported (SQL-database? NetFlow(question 1)?....). 3.)Can ntop read from such databases? 4.) How can i assure, that all the neccessary data is measured and that no traffic is twice measured. Can you give me advices how i can solve this problem? I want some ntop machines to report to one central ntop. How can i accomplish this? Can the machines send the data directly to the central machine, or should they write the data into a database. Sorry for my english...and thanks for the (hopefully) helpful replies.
