[Ntop] using ntop on ethernet with

I've got ntop running on a debian box which is plugged into a cisco SHDSL
router and I'm wondering is it possible to get ntop running on an ethernet
device with no ip? I set eth0 as "up" with no ip address and when I start
ntop daemon it says:
device eth0 left promiscuous mode
device eth0 entered promiscuous mode
device eth0 left promiscuous mode
Basically I don't want to have to give the ethernet device a REAL ip
address..
