Hi,

This is my first post to the mailing list although I've been lurking on and off for quite a while.

I have a working installation of ntop running on Debian/Ubuntu Server and have been preparing some documentation that I'd like to share with the community.  However, one problem has taken more time than all the others together and I do not have a solution.

I have tried a number of ways to get ntop to run at system startup with varying success.  Ultimately I can make it either not run at startup and execute it manually with the command:

"sudo ntop @/etc/ntop/ntop.conf"

or let it run automatically at startup but it always ignores the ntop.conf file (regardless or where it is located in the system (I put it practically everywhere)!

Perhaps the answer is simply to edit the /etc/init.d/ntop script directly and substitute in the parameters I would like to run.  Perhaps I should name the ntop.conf file as something else.  I know the syntax of the file is correct as running it from the command line works perfectly.

I also spent a lot of time playing with sudoers as I thought it might be a root permissions problem, but to no avail.

I have a Shuttle system with a twin port Intel PCI 10/100-T card in bridge mode acting as an in-line ntop.  I then use the onboard NIC as a management interface.  I like this configuration as it works quietly and reliably and I can trust the MAC and IP addresses of the traffic I see.  I also plan to use a single gigabit interface on a mirror/SPAN port at a later date and add other features easily.

I have not posted the config details as I've tried so many different configs now, it would not be meaningful.  However, I can provide specifics on everything if required.

I'm sorry if I left something out - you can contact me directly on [EMAIL PROTECTED] .
As I said, I'd like to finish my document which would allow other people to build a similar Shuttle PC based solution, but I can't get past this problem.

Best regards.
Jon Randall.
