Looks like your missing a few requirements for compiling from source Thats
a little out of the scope of this list but will instead suggest to try
installing with "apt-get install ntop". Since you are running Debian you
might as well use the built in package manager.

After it has completed the apt process the Debian package provides
instructions for getting ntop to stay running. I missed it the first time I
installed it so for the sake of anyone searching, Immediately after
installing if you run /etc/init.d/ntop start you will see a device enter
promiscuous mode and then leave promiscuous mode and ntops process dies. On
a new install this is generally due to not setting the password for the
admin section of the website. Do this by running 'ntop -A' as root.

Also under Debian you may want to install a few optional packages, graphiz
and the windows fonts package makes all the graphing work from what I've
experienced.
