I use to have a similar problem on FC5 until today :)

I tried to cut the DNS lookups and external hosts but
that did not helped - the thing that does help is:
-Q /dev/shm - this will keep the DB files on tmpfs on
a redhat machine.
So for example what I use to tun ntop is:

sudo ntop -u ntop --use-syslog=daemon --no-promiscuous
 --no-fc -Q /dev/shm -M -i "eth1,eth0" &
