I wrote some time ago, for the nBox appliance, a very simple watchdog 
program used to start/stop
and monitor ntop, nprobe and ndumper (if you don't know about nBox take 
a look at:
http://www.nmon.net/nBox_nmon.html). 
The program is very simple (just few lines of C code) and although it 
doesn't have all the
functionalities one can expect from this type of program, I think it can 
be useful outside the nBox too.
I've tested the program under debian (32 and 64 bits), no problem 
encountered so far.
If you want to give it a try let me know, I can give the code to you.
