Good call on the virtual switch thing. I'm 100% netflow so it should be an issue for me, but it's still something to keep in mind for the future.

Some of the virtual switches have had issues in the past with various NICs and promiscuous mode. Really not sure of the state of play today - I've just gotten my ESXi box up and haven't put ntop on it. But the reading I've done says that most sites are pushing traffic OUT of the VM for a monitoring box. So I'd still recommend RedHat or Ubuntu (JeOS). -----Burton From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Lay, James Sent: Friday, October 03, 2008 4:00 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [Ntop] Current view on "best" OS for nTop From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Gary Gatten Sent: Friday, October 03, 2008 2:42 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Ntop] Current view on "best" OS for nTop What's the current thought on the "best" OS for nTop? I need a bigger/better system and my boss wants my team out of the *nix support area, so wants me to get a Solaris VM from the Unix team for nTop. I've seen some have various issues with installing nTop on Solaris so I'm kinda hesitant. My other preferred option is Suse since we have/had a relationship with Novell. Any input would be appreciated! Gary "This email is intended to be reviewed by only the intended recipient and may contain information that is privileged and/or confidential. I follow the rrdbuild instructions starting with freetype (http://oss.oetiker.ch/rrdtool/doc/rrdbuild.en.html) then do the build, create an rc.ntop script, and away I go.
