Speaker: Alyson Schafer - Joys and Fears of The Teen Years When? Tuesday, January 15th, 7:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. Where? Room 215 The media feeds parents a steady stream of "bad news" about teenagers. This talk will highlight some really "feed good" research on the true state of today's teens, give insights into the teen brain, and address the challenges in family and society that must be tackled head on, like education, employment, social media, sex and drugs and YouTube rock'n'roll. As a mother of two teenage daughters, Alyson is full of real world examples of what life is like raising teens in 2013. Alyson Schafer is a psychotherapist and internationally acclaimed parenting expert. She is the Ask an Expert columnist for Today's Parent Magazine and sits on the Health Advisory Board for Chatelaine Magazine. She is the best-selling author of three parenting books published by John Wiley and Sons: "Breaking the Good Mom Myth" (2007), "Honey, I Wrecked The Kids" (2009), and her latest "Ain't Misbehavin'" ( 2011). An early-adopter, Alyson has pioneered parenting in social media. She was a panellist at this year's Social Media conference and she continuously engages parents on Twitter, Facebook and through her own parenting blog, as well as guest expert blog posts. Currently, Alyson is the parenting expert for The Bank of Montreal's SmartSteps for Parents program. She has been the spokesperson for a variety of PR campaigns and is the Canadian media's go-to parenting authority. She has appeared on such shows as Montel Williams, Canada AM, CTV news, The Marilyn Show, Steven and Chris, BT, Save Us From Our House and hosted six seasons of The Parenting Show.
