Fall Season Athletic Update Starting the first week of school, team practices began at North Toronto. From early mornings (7:15 am) in September to late afternoons (6 pm) in November, NT athletes and coaches practised and competed at NT and all over the GTA. We had approximately 200 students participate on extracurricular teams this fall. In addition, students participated in the lunch time intramural program and sports clubs (archery, table tennis, badminton). We appreciate the commitment of our volunteer teacher and community coaches and athletes to our athletic program. Here are some highlights of the fall sports season! Cross Country We had 30 runners who qualified for the city finals. We had a senior girl and 2 teams (junior girls and junior boys) qualify for OFSSA. Many athletes had vast improvements this year and always competed with a positive attitude. Coaches: Harvey, Davis, Rea Field Hockey We had 50 girls come out to try field hockey for the first time! With the help of many returning players (40) and specialty coaches (alumni, national team members), we had a busy season of skill development (coaches as well). The Tier 1 and Tier 2 teams demonstrated strong effort and determination through the season and their Semi-Final games in playoffs. This season would not have been possible without the leadership of the veterans and the commitment of everyone involved. Coaches: Heron, Rough, Russell Football (Varsity) With an abundance of new players the season started off slowly for the Varsity boy's football team. After losing their first game of the season the team rallied and went undefeated for the next 6 games and in the semi-finals they upset the first place Silverthorne Spartans. In the finals the Norsemen were in a tough battle against the massive East York Goliaths and played their hearts out to the very end, falling short of a second consecutive championship. The character and hard work the team showed should be commended. Coaches: Hood, Gardner, Russell, Andersen, Pacitti Golf (Varsity) Golf season proved to be challenging to complete this year fall. The extreme heat weather warnings led to the cancellation of the 2 tournaments resulting in a shorter season than other years. Hopefully with more temperate weather next year we can have a longer season with more opportunities to tee off! Coaches: Taylor, Rea Jr. Boys Soccer The team had a very successful regular season with an extremely talented group of grade nines and returning grade tens. The team was a high scoring force and played a very entertaining form of soccer all year. Unfortunately their playoff run fell short against the eventual champs, but none the less coaches and players should be proud of a great season. Coaches: Kinley, Minasian Sr. Boys Soccer The team had another great season in 2017. The boys finished first place in the regular season with a 6-0-2 record, and fought hard through the playoffs beating East York in the quarter finals and Marc Garneau in the Semi Finals. Unfortunately they fell a little short in the Tier 1 final and lost to Lawrence Park , but played admirably. Coach Tallevi Tennis Girls-We had two tennis teams this year - Tier I and Tier 2 teams. Though the weather did not always cooperate, both teams had a successful season placing third overall at the TDSSAA Regional Finals. Great season girls! Boys-We had high hopes for the boys' team this year. We had two squads competing in both the Tier 1 and Tier 2 levels. Unfortunately, the boys' Tier 1 tennis team failed to qualify for the cities falling in a heartbreaking and hard-fought tiebreak loss to Northern. The Tier 2 team also did not fare as well as hoped failing to advance to the regional finals after falling to Northern and Harbord. Better luck next year Boys! Coaches: Roche, Chamberlain Jr. Boys Volleyball The Junior Boys' V-ball team lost in the quarter finals to Riverdale who are rumoured not to have lost a set. Our season record was 6 and 2, both of our losses being to LPCI. Probably our season highlight was in a set against Western Tech in which we were down 24-11. We won that set 26-24 after Nick Urie simply served "in" 15 times in a row. Coaches: Mildon, Dorsey Sr Boys Volleyball After starting the season with 3 straight losses, the senior boys were committed to work hard to improve as a group winning 4 of their final 5 games to land a berth in the playoffs. Congratulations! They played a hard fought game only to lose to neighborhood rival Northern 2-0. Coach Lane Thanks to everyone involved and congratulations on your seasons! Our winter season is underway and we look forward to see our students compete on the hills, ice, courts, pool over the next few months. Check sports schedules on http://www.tdsb.on.ca/sports and the next NT winter sports update in March! Have a healthy and active new year!
