I have a similar setup. I have a desktop I built that has windows 7 on it that acts as file server and the htpc in the living room. I'd like to get the files onto something using less power, so I like the idea of the atom powered NAS. I use XBMC to play the flac files and I have airfoil installed to stream music to backyard speakers connected to an airport express. I also have an HDHomerun connected to an antenna and I use Win7 media center to record PBS for the family. Upstairs I use an old laptop connected to the TV as the HTPC. It is mostly a Netflix/hulu player but has xbmc on it for the FLAC playback.
I simplified the remote situation and am just using this for HTPC duties or just a smartphone remote app. The kid likes that it has a laser pointer. http://www.amazon.com/Hausbell-TM-Entertainment-Wireless-Keyboard/dp/B007SS70DC/ref=sr_1_13?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1368546763&sr=1-13&keywords=mini Bill From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ken Cornetet Sent: Tuesday, May 14, 2013 11:25 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [NTSysADM] RE: OT: FreeNAS on an atom D510? I'd think your system would more than adequate. Have a look over on the XBMC forum for lots of discussions about NAS for media streaming. FreeNAS and Unraid are popular for storing media. BTW, I've done pretty much the same thing. Here's my setup: 1. An old HP dc7600 running Server 2003 as a file server. This also runs my phone system (PBX in a flash) as a virtual under VMWare server. 2. XBMC running on another dc 7600 connected to my TV. 3. The infrared receiver from this MCE compatible remote http://www.amazon.com/Windows-Control-Infrared-Receiver-Ultimate/dp/B00224ZDFY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1368544521&sr=8-1&keywords=mce+remote 4. A Logitech Harmony 300 remote. I use DVDShrink (set the compression to "none" and ignore the "too big" errors) to rip my DVDs to disk, then I use handbrake to convert them to MPEG-4. As an added bonus, I set DVDShrink to only copy the main movie, so I don't have to sit through menus, previews, FBI and Interpol warnings, etc). What are you planning on using as a player for those FLAC files? So, I've recently acquired an older atom d510 system with 3 gigs of ram. Anyone using FreeNAS and have an idea of what kind of performance I'd get with that setup? I was thinking of using it to store media for the homestead. The wife is interested in ripping all the DVDs and getting them out of the living room. Anyone able to play dvd isos from a FreeNAS and happy with the performance? I also have about 100 gigs of FLAC files that I would stream to the living room and bedrooms. I considered trying to load server 2012 on it instead of FreeNAS, but I think the gui would kill performance. Thanks. Bill
