I don't have your situation, but consider that when I create groups for permissions and DLs, I'm pretty loquacious - for instance, on the file server I have US-HomeDepartmentsIT-RW and in Exchange I have US-IT-DL.
This kind of naming convention is indeed self documenting. I approve of your approach.
