I did a check of the security policy for LAN Manager authentication level, and it is not defined (i.e., default) on the RDP server.

Plus losing remote control is a pita. Your issue sounds similar to one I have previously come across. http://blog.legitit.com.au/wp/windows-8-is-unable-to-connect-to-a-remote-desktop-server-via-remote-desktop-gateway/ Not exactly the same I know but have a look at the LAN Man settings just in case. Two of our upper managers went and bought Win8 laptops, and now can't connect to the server (the VPN client works). They, naturally, want me to update the RDP service on the server so they can. Aside from losing the remote control function, are there any other gotchas in applying that update? I'm not planning to update the OS, just the RDP service.
