I've got a 1U Cisco router I use courtesy of ebay - it's been working for many years in the corner. Keep in mind when you buy commercial gear, the support cost goes way up, and when it breaks and you're not home, it's not exactly end user serviceable as the label says. Running a full linux box or something is going to run your power bill up too.
