It involves a bit of work, but at least you'll have a clean install of vCenter 5.x. When we tried it, it reported major problems in our database, so we build a new 5.1 vCenter server from scratch. Importing your ESXi hosts into the new vCenter server is easy. I turned off HA during that process to be on the safe side.
