Take a look at MDT. You can do technically everything that SCCM does regarding images and even does some things better or easier to work with. Learning curve is much less than SCCM.
Imaging over the WAN not recommended with any product but MDT can be setup with DFS to replicate during off hours since is just a share, or send the entire share or image as best works for you. You can also OEM setup contained in one USB drive. Configs are ini file driven. Search for hydration kit, it's a good start and details most of the features and concepts.
