OTOH, SharePoint can become an unmanageable beast if left to grow
organically with little oversight.

Well, yes, it is overkill if all you are doing is hyperlinked pages.
Sharepoint can do a lot more things that are really useful. We use document
libraries (with versioning) and lists extensively in our intranet.

Looks like we are going to go with Sharepoint internally for our Intranet.

Isn't this a bit overkill for a bunch of hyperlinked pages??
