Still no go: did the update, re-booted the 2008 R2 server, applied this in an
elevated command window:

cscript %windir%\system32\slmgr.vbs /ipk <KMS host key>

with my Windows Server Data Center KMS key, I still get this:

Error: 0xC004F050 The Software Licensing Service reported that the product key
is invalid

I also tried to remove the current 2008 key and reapply the new one, still no
good.

I guess I have to call Microsoft.

Yes that's the one I came across also, doing it right now and then I have to
apply the highest key in this case the 2012 R2 key. Took a bit of research.

Thanks

There should be an update that does that, but yes, you'll need to update the
info so it knows what to do with that product. We ran into that same thing with
Win8.

I think this is the one you'll want.

We have a KMS server to register our 2008 Data center servers, I just upgraded
my MS licenses to Windows server Data center 2012, I spun up a new 2012 R2
server and it's not registering, do I need to update my KMS server with the
Windows 2012 Key?
