I feel silly even asking, but has anyone seen home folders simply
disappear? Yeah, I know.

These are all sitting on a NetApp NAS and we have less than 400 of them.
The permissions are typical for home folders and we took the option to
allow Administrators full control of the users’ folders. They are created
in a typical fashion as well, where we make it an attribute of the user
account when one is requested.

At this point we have had maybe 8 of them “disappear” in a matter of
months. Those are just the ones we know of. Only Domain Admins are in the
Administrators group and there is no way any of us are deleting these. I’m
not aware of folks using folder redirection, but that would be one way of
causing the folder and contents to disappear. (Say, setting the Documents
folder to use their home drive, then later changing it to another location.)

Has anyone else seen this, or have any theories? I’m afraid it’s going to
happen to the wrong person and we’ll be held out to dry. The snapshots on
the NetApp go back about 3-4 weeks, but we have had some which were not
discovered until it was too late. Even if we can restore from a snapshot,
people can still lose work.
