It can be dangerous. But it's really the only way to get a "real replica".
Don't make mistakes with your network. :) Lots of people consider me old-fashioned, but I strongly recommend you whiteboard/blackboard/whatever, but diagram your test environment and try to find all of the places where leakage could occur and remediate them FIRST.
