APC Corporation (based in Rhode Island) (the folks that make the UPSs that
sit under everyone's desk) sized a Facility UPS for our testing facilities.
This unit which consists of a very sophisticated computer module and several
racks of (very heavy) batteries was priced at $65,000 (to the Military). It
would handle all of the computer equipment (more than 100 machines) and
gracefully shut them down, send out notices, etc.. The generator to handle
the air conditioning, however, was separate from the generator that was to
handle the electrical power to the computers. We sized a 60 Kw generator to
handle the A/C and another 60 kW generator to handle the electrical power
requirements, alarms, comm equipment, etc..
The cost for two (battle hardened) 60 kW diesel generators was $85,000
(military cost). On top of that we would have had to construct a building
(with heat) to house the generators at a cost of $60,000 (including all
electrical work and the two transfer panels). So the total cost would have
been around $210,000 for some backup generation capability and A/C backup
power. Needless to say, this plan has not been started (since we have not
been well funded for the past 3 years).
I had thought of purchasing one gas turbine generator but General Electric
has sold out all of the gas turbine units for the next two years.
Backup generation (and notification) is a real problem for us since we have
most of our power outages in the Summer. Any ideas on how to do this
inexpensively would be appreciated.

What make of environmental equipment do you have? Several of the boxes I've
used had built-in SNMP devices with MIBS for temperature, humidity, etc.
One even had a battery-powered modem for backup notification in case the
network was unavailable.
I'd check with the vendor first...
