Subject: RE: OT (a little)- Advanced/Datacenter Server vs MetaframeTerminal Services supports automatic printer redirection as long as drivers are installed on the server. I can print fine from home in a TS session. Microsoft designed TS not to automatically map network printers because this the same print job will be on the network twice. On a large network, you could imagine the problems this could cause. There are workarounds. We have extensively tested both systems and I couldn't justify spending the extra money on Citrix. I could tell no difference in performance, although the Citrix client for the Macintosh had some major problems. Luckily there is a Java client for MS TS that provides limited support for non MS clients. If you are need to set up a server farm with non MS clients, definitely buy Citrix. Citrix also supports sound and higher color depths (for a price). For 1 or 2 servers with MS clients, terminal services will work great. As a side note, Windows 2000 professional has a built in TS license, so you might not need to buy as many licenses.I don't see how how your frame relay product could possible not support TS. As long as it speaks TCP/IP on port 3389, you're fine.http://www.sunbelt-software.com/ntsysadmin_list_charter.htm-----Original Message-----

Subject: RE: OT (a little)- Advanced/Datacenter Server vs MetaframeIf I remember there's been plenty written about the differences. I think the primary difference is screen painting, and ICA is better at it.
Not running w2k, so I don't know how much it's improved over TS. But on TS there's some things lacking that might be important, like being able to print to their home printers.
Maybe www.thinclient.com has some more info.

Citrix is always recommended by the software resellers and developers
because of the profit$. I have had plenty of arguments with the Citrix
indoctrinated techs and sales personnel who have never really investigated
what terminal services will do. Unless you need to support Macintosh, or
other non MS clients, RDP is probably as efficient as ICA.
The efficiency of the applications you run are probably more important.Tom Cass

My first question is how efficient is MS's RDP technology when compared to
Citrix's ICA technology? We want to connect around 60 users to a server
over a frame relay running a product called Syteline. Citrix is recommended
but we are trying to determine if we can use W2K as a replacement and not
lose too much.

Subject: RE: OT (a little)- Advanced/Datacenter Server vs MetaframeYes. You can replace citrix to some extent with any version of Win2k
server. you do not need advanced or datacenter. What did you have in mind?

Subject: OT (a little)- Advanced/Datacenter Server vs Metaframe
Does anyone have extensive knowledge regarding the features of Advanced
Server / Datacenter Server and if it can be used as a less expensive
replacement (or close to a replacement) for Citrix Metaframe? Is this a
viable option? Has anyone tried it?Thanks,
Tim

Title: RE: OT (a little)- Advanced/Datacenter Server vs Metaframe
Nice
to know. I did try to find an answer to the print-on-the-home-printer
awhile back and always got the same answer - buy Citrix. I did find some
useful info though:
Here's
a PDF with test results, although it appears to be outdated. http://spla.sh/documents/Performance%20Differences%20between%20RDP%20and%20ICA.pdf
