I have had trouble using the Alt+3 digit non-printable characters, but everything else
has worked. Of course, Novell doesn't notice a difference between upper and
lowercase, but it will let you type it in mixed case if you so desire.
For instance, I use the Novell client and I type in IHateRuss as my password. NT
checks it against IHateRuss and approves it. Novell either checks it against
IHATERUSS or ihateruss (I don't know which) and approves it also. I have used numbers
and symbols, but have had trouble when trying to use non-printable characters.
If you are just logging into Novell without including NT then mixing case doesn't
matter. At least that is my understanding and experience.

What are the options for Novell 4.11 passwords? Can you use uppercase,
lowercase, numerals & punctuation?
