So far I don't see anything close to a solution for this. It has nothing to do
with ethernet or token net.
I had exactly the same problem using a shared copy of office, strictly an
ethernet system never a tokennet. This is a known problem with office which
one of their service packs fixed. I don't remember what I did because this was
over 2 years ago when I had this problem. Check Microsoft's knowledge base for
their solution.

What type of network are you running on? I have seen a similar issue happen
on a server that was Token Ring and during the conversion to Ethernet, the
files that were opened by Ethernet clients would become corrupted.

but what about on the server? If anti-virus there, run a test by disabling
the A/V and see if the problem persists...

Virus scan 4.5 w/svc pk 1 on the 9x clients and netshield 4.5 w/svc pk 1 on
nt and 2k workstations. So far this seems to be limited to the 9x clients.

Subject: files marked as read only
I have a win 2k server my clients are using local installed office 2k,
people are complaining that when they open their files on the server they
are marked as read only.. I have verified they are the only one that have
the file open but what I did notice when I got to the server AD and look at
open files I see the user has the files open twice. So I went to their
workstation which is a win98 client I verify they have only made one attempt
at opening the file. I then go to the server and check how much time the
file is open and sure enough it shows that user has the file open twice. So
I go and close the file to only find there was only one file open. What I
have had to do as a work around is have them save as a different name this
allowed them to save the file now this is not the preferred method of doing
business
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated thanks
