Here is a basic process that will work, it is what we use for this situation.
It specifies HP since the majority of our printers are HP, but the process is
the same for all other brands too.

**********************************
Users with W2K Professional workstations can have trouble mapping to print
queues on print servers which are the result of an incompatability between
HP's NT4 drivers and W2K drivers (other manufacturers also). If you receive
such a trouble ticket, the following procedure should be used:

1. Verify the problem is a driver comptability issue. Symptoms of this are:
     - User attempts to map to print queue
     - User receives error message to the effect of: "The server on which the
printer resides does not have the correct printer drive installed. If you
want to install the driver on your local computer, click OK."
     - User attempts to install appropriate driver locally (i.e. clicks OK to
error and select print driver from list or installs driver from disk).
     - User will receive error message: "The printer driver you selected is
either not compatible with your current version of Windows, or it may not be
available. Select a compatible driver from the list, or contact your
administrator for help."

2. Download the driver version designated by the printer vendor as being W2K
compatible for the printer model referenced in the trouble ticket. For HP
printers you should download the drivers that are listed for the W2K O/S.

3. Setup a print queue on the test print server TESTPRT001 that matches the
production print queue that user is trying to map to. Use the new drivers
just download when creating this queue.

4. Verify correct printer functionality from all client types: Windows 95/98,
Windows NT 4 Workstation, and Windows 2000 Professional clients.

5. Create Change Controls to update the print drivers. The driver should be
updated on all production print servers for all print queues where that model
printer is used. A
Change Control should be created for each server that is to be updated.

6. Update all of the print queues with the new driver.

Have you tried using the NT4 driver and see if the W2k machines can print.
I've ben finding that all of the NT4 printer drivers on our network are
compatible with our W2k workstations.

Subject: W2K Print Drivers on NT4

Hello all,

This is a dumb basic question, but I've looked in The Usual
Places (technet, Andrew's KB, etc.) without success. I've also been
trying to set up DB2/Peoplesoft client stuff on our new Metaframe Xpe
setup (talk about brain scramble ;-).

I would like to add W2K printer drivers to my NT 4 File and Print server
so that the new W2K workstations coming online can automagically get their
printer drivers installed from the server. I see the obvious way to
do this for "downlevel" drivers (select "alternate drivers" from the
printer Properties page) but obviously W2K is not one of my drop down
choices ;-).

I am getting differing answers from my colleagues whether we have any
print servers successfully doing this (so I can check directories, check
how the registry is set up, that sort of thing). Is this even possible?

If so, could someone point me in the right direction?

(Please don't tell me to set up a W2K print server. I'd like to but
it's probably not in the cards.)

I'd appreciate being cc'd on any responses, since the digest delivery
seems to be somewhat unreliable at the moment and I'd like to see
what you have to say ;-)

Thanks,
