reminds me of a funny situation.
During the time of our complete network upgrade, we
had a consulting firm coming in and replacing some desktops and doing some
informal troubleshooting at the same time. This was before I started any of my
training. Anyway, we had an old NCR computer (anyone remember them?) that was
a 486. The user complained that every once in awhile, the screen would just go
black, then flicker for a couple of minutes, and then return to normal.
This would occur every few minutes. I swear these guys spent
30-45 minutes looking the thing over, taking it apart, etc. Well I walked
by and saw them all standing around waiting for the computer to flip out
again, so I asked what was going on. A minute later the computer did just what
they explained it was doing. So I sat down, right clicked on the desktop,
selected properties, turned around and made sure they were watching, selected
the screen saver tab, and selected none. Then I got up, turned around, said
"there ya go" and walked out.
I
just thought I'd brag a little bit since it was a memorable experience from
early in my career. Glad to see you got the problem worked
out.

It's amazing how you sometimes can't see the the forest for all the
trees that are in the way. That was it!
Don't normally ever run them and it got turned on on this guy. I
should have been tipped off by how it was acting and I do remember(way back
in my memory somewhere) about this being an issue. I'm not waiting so
long before I get with you guys next time.

It's a Dell 2200(266Mhz single processor), WinNT 4.0 Server
SP6.0a, PDC(few local users authenticating), 256mb ram, plenty of
diskspace, pretty stripped running only essential services(no IIS or
anything like that). About 15 users use it for file and print
services.
Recently when it's idle(no keyboard or mouse activity) the
Processor/% Processor Time and System/Processor Queue Length go up to
%100 and 4-5 respectively. This is while we're monitoring bandwidth
in/out(low) and disk activity(low). Interestingly enough when keyboard
or mouse is accessed the processor drops to less than 5%(also drops when
accessed with PcAnywhere) and stays there until it's idle again
then it climbs back to around 100%. We are using Perfmon to see this
which is pretty limited. I would think that the idle thread is causing
what we're seeing on the graph if it wasn't for the queue climbing
and users complaining about access being slow when it's
happening.
Mcafee Netshield hasn't shown anything but is currently disabled
for trouble-shooting.
Questions -
1. Anyone have an idea what's going
on?
2. What's the easiest way to see what's actually using the
cpu(Taskmgr shows Idle process up - all others minimal)? Do we have to
add the scores of threads to the graph to try and find what's doing
it?
3. What's a good low end package for monitoring and diagnosing
this sort of thing?
4. Am I missing something?
Any help would be appreciated.
