HFNETCHK stopped working here after applying the patches it suggested...

It is next to useless anyhow, because, as far as I can see,  it just checks
registry entries
associated with particular hotfixes and not for the existence of the
corrected files.  So if one applies one of the rollup patches HFNETCHK still
claims that the component parts need applying.  Go figure!
