There is a easier way to allow your machine to modify the schema.  Click Start, then Run and type "regsrv32 schmmstr.dll" .  This will allow you to edit the schema once this has been ran on the sever acting as the schema master.  I am almost positive that this is the correct .dll file.  I might be off on the spelling.

Okay no one has mentioned this yet so here I go. You need to register the Active Directory Schema mmc Snap-in. (I don't know how to do it manually but if you run adminpak.msi from the i386 directory from any SP or form the 2k server CD it will install all the MMC Snap-in's). Then go to Run and type MMC. Click on the Console Menu and go to Add/Remove Snapin. Click Add. Then add the Active Directory Schema Snapin. Say okay to everything to get back to the MMC Console. Right Click the Active Directory Schema and go to Operations Master. The checkbox for "The Schema may be modified on this Domain Controller" should be checked. Make sure your Current Focus is the DC that is Schema FSMO.
