Stu,
I know that you can't just turn up in Canada and apply for jobs, as
there are tax issues etc.
You will need a visa & a work permit,
For Canada the best site to go to is http://www.cic.gc.ca (Citizenship
and Immigration Canada), also you could contact the Canadian Consulate
in London (http://www.canada.org.uk)
You can also get a temp work vis for info on that look at
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/index-work.html. I have found from
personal experience that if you apply for jobs while you do not have the
relevent paper work (saying you are in the process or whatever) you
don't even get replies from agencies or companies.

Thanks for all the help guys,
a few more questions:
(1) I had a look online last night for jobs in Vancouver, there don't
seem
to be too many NT/Network admin/cisco networking jobs around there.
Can anyone tell me if this is representative of the true climate in
Vancouver at the mo, or have I just been visiting the wrong sites?
(2) If i was going to instead go to the states to work, where would be
the
best locations for the above job types?
San Francisco maybe?
(3)Does anyone know how hard it is to get into the US/Canada to work
for,
say 6 months just to try it out?
Will I have to get visa's and permits, or can i just go out there for a
while and then apply for jobs when i get there?

We had a week of 30+ C this summer with high humidity in Toronto. You
didn't want to do too much outdoors and ran for the A/C every chance you
had. Normal summer temps are 25-30C and not too bad..
