I'm afraid that you're going to be creating too many potential problems
if you try to restore any of the OS (or applications for that matter)
from tape. If it were me I'd rebuild the new system from scratch,
applications and all, and then selectively bring over data and variable
files from tape.
I tend to be a bit conservative anyway. But, IMHO, a few extra hours now
could save you several days work later. There's just too much interplay
between OS and applications and registry, if you're not extraordinarily
careful you could overwrite (or omit) critical files that could cause
your system to "blue screen" during the first reboot.
Personally, I use Veritas' products with "Intelligent Disaster Recovery"
installed on critical machines. I'm sure ACRServe has something similar,
but in this case that's closing the barn door after the horse has fled.
Best of luck,

I am trying to rebuild one of my NT 4.0 SP6a SQL server (along with
other applications) from old machine to new machine. The older machine
is running on dual processor with SCSI hard drive and new machine is
dual processor with IDE hard drive. I am using the ARCserve 2000 to
backup this old SQL server from different server over the network.
What I want to do is install minimal OS on the new machine and recover
everything from the backup, but worry about difference of hard drive.
The question is:
1. Is it possible to recover whole system from the tape backup including
OS?
2. If it is, can I recover whole OS even though different hardware?
Thanks.
