A network should have no more than 5 segments, 4 repeaters and 3 mixing
segments between any two DTEs.

A mixing segment is a segment with more than 2 interfaces attached to
it.

A link segment is a coax UTP or fibre segment without DTE modes.

When 5 segments are used the maximum length of a FOIRL (Fibre Optic
Inter-Repeater Link) should be no greater than 500m.

When 4 segments are used then the maximum length of FOIRL may be
increases to 1000m.

These rules are designed to:

 minimise reflections

 maintain acceptable attenuation

limit round trip times to 575 bit times (i.e. to maintain the required
collision domain)

limit the interframe gap shrinkage (must be less than 49 bits

how many devices do you have segmenting your network? Are you breaking
the
5,4,3 rule?
