If your PDC fails your BDC should still authenticate logins. You will
not be able to make any modifications to the ACL - change passwords, add
users or computers, etc.. - until a new PDC comes online. If your BDC
was failing to authenticate logins you have some network issue check the
BDC event logs.

Sean's right. Promotion isn't automatic. But authentication should occur
at
any PDC/BDC which should allow your users to log in.

I believe you actually have to promote the BDC to a PDC while the PDC is
off-line. Do this from Server Manager.

My apologies for asking this again, I know it has been discussed briefly
before, but I found no reference in the archives, so I had to ask
again. As
always, when you don't need it, it doesn't register!

I just had a drive failure on my primary controller (NT4), (which was
raided
so no big deal), but the backup domain controller failed to take over.
I
remember a short discussion about this, but I don't think anything was
actually discussed about what actually is supposed to occur when this
happens. The MS KB articles are of little use.

When I down a primary for a short time (say for a reboot), the users
have
still been able to validate logins, so I have always presumed that the
backup has been taking over. This time, it did not, and I was wondering
why
not? Then I recalled the discussion here a couple of months ago and
tried
to remember what was decided. Could anyone refresh my memory, on list or
off, without calling me too many names for not doing my own research?
(This
Nimda recovery thing all this week has my nerves a bit frazzled and my
eyelids drooping!)

I do appreciate the help I get here!
