I have always hosted my own DNS …… and whacked in an open-source spam filter
solution there as well … been really handy for me and my customers.

I’m not sure why you find this “hard to believe”

Reverse PTR records need to be registered by whoever currently “controls” the
relevant IP address space. Check out how the reverse lookup DNS zone works.

NSOL is fine for A records, but they do not offer reverse DNS for MX records. I
learned this mistake the hard way. They are one of the biggest brand names in
the space and I found it hard to believe they did/do not provide this "basic"
service required to properly handle MX records.

My registrar is Network Solutions - any reason I can't (or shouldn't) be using
them?

It looks like if they are hosting our DNS as well as our domain names, I can
make DNS changes 24x7 (and at no additional cost).

Thanks,

Dave
