Verizon and AT&T are eliminating analog cell phone service on February 18.
Others carriers are likely to follow suit. This won't affect modern cell
phones, but may affect older ones. However, this will affect OnStar and similar
services for many vehicles. According to this article, Lexus was installing
analog systems until 2004, and GM as late as 2005. Even high end Mercedes were
shipping with analog communications equipment last year. The Washington Post
reports that car users may have been notified.

Replacing a cell phone is pretty cheap, but upgrading a car's communications
equipment probably isn't.
