It can be d2d or d2t or d2d2t. I run mine to a SAN. The disk can be FC
or iSCSI SAN or DAS.

How much space was required for DPM, or in other words, what backup
storage or medium did you connect it to? We do a lot of backups to disk
and sometimes USB...can you back up to these components or is it only
tape, etc.

If you are thinking of D2D, running DPM would be less resource intensive
than NTBackup. The cost per server is quite low, and it is SQL, Exchange
and SharePoint aware. Using VSS you can get 15 minute restore increments
instead of hours or days and your users can do their own restores the
same way that VSS works. I used it to replace BE and DoubleTake and have
been thrilled with it thus far.

How does NTBackup handle locked files?
What about Exchange, SQL databases?

With the cost of disk being so low these days I have several clients
doing
D2D backups using ntbackup and taking the firewire/usb drive off site
and a
few of the medium sized clients are doing wan sync replication to a data
center. I know ntbackup isn't the most robust but even with 8-10 servers
you
have all the agents you need (sql/exchange) and you can auto print
reports.

I sent my thoughts to you, sorry but never been a big fan of
Veritas/Symantec either.

Subject: Backup Software Question

List Members,

Symantec Backup Exec (formerly Veritas) is coming due to be renewed this
month and I'm just not very happy with its performance this last year.
We continually get backup failures on one server stating it has too much
activity to be "snapped" when in fact the server has no activity at all.

In looking back at past posts, there are several choices.

I have setup a poll and would appreciate it if you would take time to
answer a couple of questions for me. Keep in mind we do not have a
budget at this time to purchase more hardware and limited budget for new
software.

If a choice is not listed, please type in your choice and submit the
poll.
It is limited to the first 100 responders and closes at 5:00pm tomorrow.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.
