Thanks again everyone... turns out I'm going to have to set them up sooner than
later after all. The former print server finally died of old age this morning.
The good news though is that it also means I can finally retire the 4 external
modems that provided dial up. Yes - I seriously had faculty and staff using
dial up!

We set up a second server with the same printernames.

Then we used a vbscript in the loginscript to remap the old printers to the new
ones for everyone.

Then you wait a while so most people get changed automatically before retiring
the old printserver.

We didn't change the printernames to keep things easier for the users.

The only real issue I see is that your helpdesk might get some calls after the
old printer server is retired. I have done this type of thing many times for
our schools. Not sure how you have the students and staff access the printers,
we would put shortcuts into the start menu for them to use based upon what
there home school was. Then last year we setup the printer shortcut to run a VB
script that got the location IP information and then based upon the the groups
they were in would then bring up only the printers at the location they were
at. But if they have installed the printer from the old server they just have
to add the one from the new server, but still a pain for the helpdesk if the
staff is at least not sent an email about the change.

Wow you're good, I don't stop at seconds guessing myself, I sometimes make it
to ace - 5 times guessing myself!

Thanks - I needed the second opinion as I kept second guessing myself!

With the exception of centralized reporting/logging, it is indeed as easy as
it sound. No problem with having 2 print servers point to the same
printer... We've done lots of migrations that way...
