I had a similar thing happen to a friend that I only got around by disabling
his network card. After that the wireless stayed on regardless of privilege.
Luckily he didn't need to use the NIC, and it took me so long to fix I
didn't stay to work out why this cured the issue - very unprofessional of
me....
