My placement is simple assuming that environmental (power/HVAC) and network cabling is adequate; I make sure I can open the rack doors completely if installed, I make sure I can slide the servers all the way out for maintenance (don't want to have to move a rack to install a server), and I make sure I don't block doors/vents. Side to side I butt them right up against each other. Unless you have a specific need to get into the rack from the side, I've never found it to be necessary to spread them out that way...
