As do I (philosophical discussions about how to do the work). But, I always check the switch, and while I am capable of doing multiple things at one time, I find that if I want something done well (without having to redo it or wondering if I got it done) I generally have to slow down and pay attention to the task at hand. Checking a write protect switch is a simple ritual that alters my frame of mind and says, pay attention dumba$$.
Reading a DVD with a live file system on it isn't a fast task in computing, and I prefer not having to wait for something any longer than I must. The longer I wait to do a task, the more likely I'm off on another unrelated task and that is a common condition in instances where I make mistakes. As with all things in life, YMMV.
