So I’ve moved the tempdb, model, & msdb databases. I was getting ready to move
the master db, when I came across this note:

Although it was possible to move the Resource database in SQL Server 2005,
things changed in SQL Server 2008 where the location of the Resource database
can no longer be relocated from its default directory. In SQL Server 2005, the
Resource database depended on the location of the master database. The Resource
data and log files had to reside together and had to be in the same location as
the master data file (master.mdf). Therefore, in SQL Server 2005, if you moved
the master database, you had to also move the Resource database to the same
location as the master data file. In SQL Server 2008, the location of the
Resource database cannot be moved from its default location.

How is this going to affect me moving forward? Is there a way to resolve this?
As the SQL server is a cluster, none of these reside w/in the C: path.

Gah! That’s the problem. I’m looking at several docs now for how to move the
system/master databases. Gonna be a busy weekend.

I am thinking from the Windows 2003 Cluster side of it ( I haven’t done
anything with Windows 2008 clustered) that you must add the new disks as as
dependent resources of the SQL Service, before you remove the old ones) (Along
with both nodes needing to know its cluster aware) and then you need to copy
what was on the old disks to the new disks, and then remove the old disks.

If the old disks have the SQL service master, model, temp db’s you might be a
little stuck on just trying to replace the disk. Most times when we had to
migrate SAN’s it was done in the background ( disk to disk migration via EMC
tools, so the host basically saw nothing, disk signatures, and disk letters and
sizes stayed the same.)

As a side note if anyone has a good write up on Windows 2008 Clustering step by
step guide that would be nice to have. I know the windows 2003 document that
Microsoft put out is what I use and its cake to take care of the clustering
when needed, but in Windows 2008 I haven’t found a resource such as it to do a
step by step setup, testing of failover etc etc.

I'm not real clear on what you're doing. New SAN replaces old, but what else?
Did the new disk resources come online? Did they have the same drive letters
as the ones they replaced?

Note, I know that clustering has changed a lot since Server 2003, which is the
last OS I've had much cluster experience with. So forgive me if the above
makes no sense within the context of 2008R2 clustering.

Also, what about the event logs. I would think that SQL would be screaming a
lot of information if the service can't start.

I know it should be as simple as change the dependencies and delete the disks
in Server 2008 R2 Cluster Manager, but that’s not what happened. I removed the
disks, and SQL promptly shut down & would not restart. I re-added the disks in
Cluster Manager & SQL started with no problem.

Thoughts?
