Well, I made 7 trips to China in the last 5 years with side trips to Japan,
Singapore and Australia and always took my laptop. I have an iPhone, but it’s
screen is just toooooo small. Never had any hard disk issues, but I prefer the
laptop. If I had a ipad, that would be even better.

+1 on not taking a laptop. So much easier not to travel with one, especially
internationally. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories, especially if you have an
encrypted disk like many of are utilizing.

Thanks, all. So far it looks like my best option is purchasing a China SIM
card and a $12/day unlimited 3G data plan for my (soon to be) unlocked GSM
device. Not sure it's worth the expense, but since I'm not taking a laptop
with me it may be my only choice.

Its cheaper to just buy a phone in-country and buy minutes from China mobile.

Subject: OT: Cell Data Access in China?

I have a tourist trip planned for early November and would like to have data
access on my AT&T Blackberry phone while in China. I don't need BB mail access
or even cell phone, but would like to access websites and to use the Google
Translate app while we're there.

Is this feasible?

Any recommended options?
