It wasn't so much that they were trying to intercept and determine the play calling signals for use during the game, but that they were filming them to interpret them for the next time they played that team. It wasn't so much that they were trying to catch the signals (Not technically against the rules) but that they broke a specific rule to do it. A team is only allowed so many cameras to film a game and they are allowed only certain angles. On whole, was it cheating? Yes. They got caught, the camera was seized. Was it a big deal? Only to people who hate the Patriots.
Personally, I look at it like NASCAR. The teams there are always looking at ways to bend the rules to find an edge to get that extra 2 or 3 miles per hour that could mean the difference between coming in first or coming in second. It happens in all sports. Everyone is always looking for that "edge". -----Original Message----- From: Micheal Espinola Jr [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, January 22, 2008 1:30 PM To: NT System Admin Issues Subject: Re: OT: A very timely movie clip Im not a huge/regular football fan/watcher, so I have a question for you: Is what they did (or rather got caught doing) really that outrageous? Don't teams watch each other all the time to try to guess hand signs, etc, in all sports? Heck, you see people covering thier mouths while giving plays on the sideline all the time. No flames please. Im not defending the Pats coaching staff - Im asking an honest question to those that are bigger sports fans than I. TIA!
