It doesn't work at all. Would you like to sell your old arrays cheap? :) Just kidding, it seems to work fine.
I've got an old PS50 array, I think. Whatever model came with 14 250GB drives. I've upgraded it to the latest firmware and I was able to put in 8 1TB drives and it recognized them and allowed me to use them. While I've got this test system, I'm doing some experimentation: I've found that you can mix drive sizes and it will use the smallest sized drive as the basis for how much to allocate from each drive. The array will function with as few as 4 drives. More drives can be added, but I'm still testing how to expand the usable space. I'll try and finish Monday, but as far as I can tell, at for least the older arrays, you can use whatever drives you feel comfortable with. We just got an old cheap EQ box with small drives for testing. Maybe I'll slap some bigger drives in it today and let you know how it goes. Additionally, are you maintaining a maintenance agreement on said equipment, and if so, does it void the maintenance? The only actual experience I have is replacing a Dell 250GB drive with a non-Dell one. Couldn't have been easier. Pulled out the old, inserted the new and auto rebuild ensued. I suspect Dell are going to want a small fortune. I appreciate all the implications for support and warranty, I'm more interested in whether it will actually work and if anyone here has done it?
