There are GUIDs assigned to the MSIs which Windows tracks (and are also in the 
policy), so I'm sure that's how it works.

I generally stay away from GP software distribution, though. There's no BITS 
involved - it's straight SMB over the wire.

If you have several SW packages deployed via group Policy - once a machine has 
received all these apps how does it know not to reinstall - is there a tagging 
via GPO or does it actually kick off the installer and it's the installers job 
to say "yo, you already have this".

I already have McAfee going via GPO and would like to do other software but I 
want to make sure I don't kill logon performance.

Also, does it leverage BITS so VPN over slow connections aren't killed, or how 
does that work?
