If I'm reading this correctly, this is a VM that runs before you even boot your OS that watches for viruses/malware. It's like the proof of concept "Blue Pill"[1] malware, except it's trying to stop Bad Things(TM) that even your OS can't see.
Kind of like a RootKit AV? If that's the case, then the requirements for a VT-x compatible processor makes sense. And now that Mcafee is owned by Intel, they would naturally only suppor their own processors. Especially initially, as AMD's implementation may or may not work differently.
