SHORT VERSION Win 2008 R2 install says "The partitions on the disk selected for installation are not in the recommended order. For additional information about installing to GPT disks go to the Microsoft website (www.microsoft.com) and search for GPT." but there is no applicable information on Microsoft's website.
LONG VERSION So... got our brandy-new Dell PowerEdge R510 in. No paid OS yet, but I'm playing with the Win Server 2008 R2 evaluation disc I downloaded from Microsoft's website. Booted CD in UEFI mode. Selected Datacenter/Server Core. It found the disk array okay, showing the OEM partitions. I asked it to create a 80,000 MB partition for the OS after those. It auto-created a 128 MB reserved partition, and then the one I asked for (as #4). Okay, I guess. So then I pick the 80 GB partition and tell it to install to that, and it comes up with this wonderful message: "The partitions on the disk selected for installation are not in the recommended order. For additional information about installing to GPT disks go to the Microsoft website (www.microsoft.com) and search for GPT. Do you want to proceed with installation?" Screen shot: http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/5886/partitionorderwrong.jpg If I then click "Cancel" I get another message, "Windows is unable to install to the selected location. Error: 0x8030002C." Searching Microsoft's website for "GPT" finds lots and lots of things, but of course none address this message. The closest I've come to applicable guidance is this: "The order of partitions on the disk should be ESP (if any), OEM (if any) and MSR followed by primary data partition(s). It is particularly important that the MSR be created before other primary data partitions." (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hardware/gg463525) The partitions on the disk are displayed as: #1 "ESP" 300 MB System #2 "DELLUTILITY" 40 MB Primary #3 128 MB MSR (Reserved) #4 78.1 GB Primary I presume #1 is ESP, #2 is OEM, #3 is MSR, and #4 is primary data. Which is exactly what they ask for, no? I tried Googling the exact error message and found almost nothing. Certainly Microsoft's website doesn't have anything matching that message.
