Yes, but it's not like Microsoft doesn't do this for no reason.  They
acquire technologies and often incorporate them into existing or expanded
versions of product lines to customer benefit.  Google does this too but
their marketing feel is currently one of 'free offerings forever' which
doesn't actually match their published words.

Recently SolarWinds bought a company that had a product we used.  Based on
their current support efforts it is doubtful we will be renewing this
product.

We have however benefited from the improvements in LCS to OCS over time
(not yet on Lync).

It was Connectix and where I was they were known on the PC platform as a
price competitive offering against VMware (that had a MAC client).  They
were bought in 2003.  I will say that I am anxiously awaiting they
virtualization on Windows 8 because what I have seen so far looks awesome.
